From 11 February to 26 March, the campaign Dagen Zonder Vlees (literally “days without meat”) is running in Flanders. It means that many people are trying to eat less or no meat at all during the 40 days of Fast until Easter. The campaign wants to make people aware of the impact of meat consumption on the environment. The aim is not to convert everybody into vegetarianism, but to sensibilize people and convince them that a diet with less meat or fish isn’t boring or tasteless, on the contrary! In Antwerp there are lots of good veggie addresses. We give you some tips!

Foodie hotspots in Antwerp // Part II

, , , , ,

Last week, we shared some foodie hotspots with you. Have you managed to visit one of these places? Let us know how it was! This week we have even better news, because we have some more tips for you! Are you ready to discover tasteful and gastronomic Antwerp?

  • Divin: master sommelier Sepideh Sedaghatnia has Iranian roots. She’s been living in Belgium since she was 17. She was elected “Sommelier of the Year” in 2013 and is the author of the book 69 things you’ve always wanted to know about wine. Only a few months ago, “Sepi” opened her own restaurant at ‘t Zuid in Antwerp. Divin is a trendy wine bistro, where people come to enjoy the atmosphere, the music, the wine, the fingerfood, the tapas and the daily specials. Come have a seat at one of the big tables or at the counter, and experience what Divin tastes like! Verschansingstraat 5-7, Antwerpen, www.divinbysepi.be

  • Plateau Royal: Philippe Hawinkel has always been into seafood. He once had a seafood wholesale store, was a cook on a private yacht and sold oysters on Antwerp markets. In June 2015, he opened his River Café & Seafood Restaurant Plateau Royal, located on the first floor of the Noorderterras, with a magnificent view on the river Scheldt. On the menu you can find a so-called “seafood plateau royal” with either 1, 2 or 3 layers. But you can order a simple fish dish as well. In short, this is the place to be for “fishie foodies”! Jordaenskaai 27, 2000 Antwerpen, plateauroyal.be

  • Món means “world” in Catalan. A big oxhead sculpture, a glass-walled kitchen in the middle and a Josper charcoil oven are eyecatchers in this bistro. The Món chefs use their very own charcoil, which gives a delicate and particular taste to their homegrown meat from a farm in Stabroek (near Antwerp). Try one of their homemade sausages! Sint-Aldegondiskaai 30, 2000 Antwerpen, www.monantwerp.com

Have a great weekend! And if you happen to visit one of these place, keep us posted on your experiences :-)

Foodie hotspots in Antwerp // Part I

, , , , ,

Bistros, food shops , trendy eateries and gastronomic restaurants are booming in Antwerp. The city offers infinite challenges for foodies. Here are 3 hotspots that you might wanna check out:

  • Bites & Wines: in her cosy mini-eatery Katherine Nash shows that vegan cuisine isn’t boring and monotonous at all. The menu, on which you’ll find no meat or dairy, changes every day. Katherine uses fresh biological ingredients and her meals are all gluten-free. The perfect place for people with a food allergy or intolerance. Oude Beurs 60, 2000 Antwerp, www.bitesandwines.be

  • Tan: “Cross cultural living food” is this health shop/cooking class/restaurant’s mantra. In the shopping area, you can buy specific kitchen utensils such as juicers and the Vitamix superjuicer. You’ll also find biological fruits and veggies, gluten-free grocery goods, healthy candy and all kinds of soy products. The restaurant menu is entirely gluten- and lactose-free. You can also follow a cooking couse on the basis of “living foods”. A truly inspiring place! De Burburestraat 6, 2000 Antwerp, tanclub.org

  • Chickpea: Jossy, who comes from Israel, opened this place only recently. The number of places is very limited: four people can sit around the table, five at the counter by the window. Jossy sells Italian coffees and fresh juices. There’s hummus in 5 varieties (such as chickpeas and mushrooms) and salads. What to think of a low carb tabouleh or fresh tomato-cucumber salad with mint? Exactly: irresistible! Oudaan 4, 2000 Antwerp, www.chickpea.be
